As one year comes to an end, I find the first signs that spring is only a matter of weeks away, on a walk through woodland. A carpet of snowdrops has started to break through the dead vegetation. Fresh green shoots offering a promise of long, warm days and new life.

Cold sunday morning and I set off early to photograph the frost on the waterfalls. However, it was exposed tree roots with a layer of ice on the top that caught my eye. It wasn’t the best day for photography…quite dark and not really as frosty as expected.

Want to catch the first light over Yorkshire’s east coast, so it’s a really early start..5am. It’s a 70 mile drive to Spurn Head and I get there a little later than hoped… just before 7am. In the next 2 hours I took 138 photographs, until my camera memory card is full. But I have got what I want. The photograph of the moving waves is a 1 second exposure and you can see the translucent mist-like quality where the water washes over the pebbles.

Spurn Head made a huge impression on me last week. I only stayed there for two hours but I am longing to get back there and spend a full day photographing the wildlife. I am working all weekend again, so can’t go today. Spurn Head is a coastal wilderness with maybe a mile of sand-dunes, washed-up flotsom, the odd angler and birds wading in mud and rock pools.

Having worked 7 days a week for the last few weeks, I managed to escape to the Yorkshire coast to take some photos for my final college photography project. The black and white images were taken at Spurn Point, a fabulous location. The colour picture is the famous and much photographed Flamborough Lighthouse. I took several photos earlier but waited just to see if there would be a sunset.
