February 2006

Over the Christmas period, I caught sight of a Cadbury’s selection pack in Sainsburys. Visually it reminded me of the selection packs that I designed for Nestle Rowntree in 1990. My idea then was to produce a design that incorporated the brand pictures into the actual design on the carton. Previous christmas packaging had shown the products on the carton sides or even the back of the packs – instead of being proud of their brands.

What is interesting to me is how technology has improved how we work. In 1990 I was still working on a drawing board with marker pens. Now working on the latest Apple G5 equipped with Photoshop CS – the only limit is my imagination. I would love to redesign the christmas packs that I produced 15 years ago!

Spending a little time on Google Earth late one night, I realised that the photo of Kirkstall Abbey had been taken when the Leeds Shakespeare Festival was on. You can clearly see the stage, canopy over the audience seats and even a few actors and people in the front row seats. Do you think in 10 years time the images will be so sharp that it will be possible to recognize people?

I had a bit of fun on a cold wet sunday afternoon and created this image to enter into a competition run by Mike Davidson. Mike’s blog is the first blog site that I came across. Blog sites seem to be appearing everywhere and give website viewers the chance to communicate with the site creator.
